Tsugaru Fujimi Lake Park is located in the tranquil town of Tsuruta and is next to the lake, in which Mount Iwaki is reflected. The parking is available for those arriving by car. Admission is free.
The lake is the beating heart of the park, wide and serene, crossed by a long wooden bridge with a traditional curved shape. The name of the bridge is ‘Tsuru-no-mai’, meaning ‘dancing cranes’, and the three arches interspersed with pavilions are said to represent a pair of cranes in flight. The red-headed cranes are one of the park’s main attractions. Believed to be a symbol of longevity, they also bring good luck to visitors who, it is believed, will enjoy a long life by crossing the bridge.
But that is not the only reason to cross the bridge: the pavilions that dot it are ideal for taking photographs or simply relaxing and admiring the view – the banks gilded with leaves in autumn or pink with cherry blossom in spring, against the blue silhouette of the mountain.
The humid climate created by the lake has favoured the growth of beautiful woods, through which quiet paths wind. Several species of birds find shelter along the shores, not only the aforementioned cranes, but also kingfishers, white egrets and mallards. Water lilies, with their pastel-coloured petals, and other aquatic plants play an important role in the ecosystem: their roots filter out excess nutrients in the water, helping to maintain water clarity, supporting fish life and biodiversity. Human activity is also important, through rainwater management and the restoration of surrounding wetlands.
Whether it is autumn or spring, or you are seeking solace from the summer heat (not to mention the beauty of the snow-covered forests in winter), Fujimi Lake Park is one of the most fascinating nature destinations in Aomori Prefecture.
