The Yoimiya (Eve Festival) of Tsuruta Hachimangu Shrine is happening on Wednesday, July 30th and Thursday, July 31st, 2025.
The Yoimiya is essentially the eve of the Grand Festival for the local guardian deity. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness traditional Shinto rituals, including:
Natsukoshi-Oharai (Summer Purification Ritual)
This is a significant Shinto ritual performed to cleanse oneself of impurities and sins accumulated over the first half of the year. Participants then pray for good health and protection from illness for the remaining six months.
Miko (Shrine Maiden) Dances
These are traditional Japanese dances performed by shrine maidens at Shinto shrines.
Lion Dances
A dynamic dance where a performer wears a lion mask.
Kagura (Ancient Shinto Music and Dance)
A Shinto ritualistic dance, often involving music and prayers, performed to honor deities and ancestors.
