It is said that during the Edo period (1603 – 1867), Tsuruta was a winter-feeding site for many red-crowned crane. In 1997, a pair of red-crowned crane was acquired from Heilongjiang, China to nest in Tsuruta. Another pair of red-crowned crane was acquired from Amur Oblast, Russia in 1997. By January 2012, Crane Nature Park became a home for many red-crowned crane including baby crane that were born at the park. In addition, there are 5 male and 5 female red-crowned crane that came from Tama Zoo.
