The village name Tsurudomari consist of two words “Tsuru(Crane)” and “Domari(to stay)” According to Tsuruta local history, it is believed that this area had many swamps and was a winter-feeding site for many red-crowned crane.

Tsurudomari Station is a train station on JR Gono Line, operated by JR East, which only handles Jobiken (pre-printed ticket) sales. It is an above-ground station with a single platform and a single track. Passengers are required to alight and board from the front entrance when it’s a one-man operated train.
The station building is a renovated classic wooden building which was originally built in November 1927. Average daily number of passengers of Tsurudomari station is 46 (2011).*Resort Shirakami, limited-stop rapid service train, does not stop at Tsurudomari Station.
